Discoveries in Science: The 3D Printer at Meadowvale Secondary School

During my research into new technologies and discoveries in science on the rise, I found that the 3D printer is becoming a more and more popular and sought after product. The uses for this type of technology are endless, and people are coming with loads of prototypes and ideas to be printed by the printer.

The printer uses plastic to create any design that is uploaded into its computer via USB chip. Searching the internet, I found out that Meadowvale Secondary School has been using 3D printing technology since last year, and integrates its uses into some of their clubs and programs including robotics, art and design. I think that of all of the recent discoveries in science, 3D printing is the future of technology and manufacturing. When more materials are incorporated (like synthetic human tissue) it opens a huge possibility in the medical field, and allows people to regain small organs such as a nose, ear, or skin to be grafted. In a video I watched on Youtube, there was a site where blueprints for products to be downloaded are given for free, you can create anything from toys to plumbing parts, assuming that it is made of plastic. This invention also leaves a huge potential for danger, in the video I watched there was also a man who is trying to replicate a fully automatic firearm for free download. This would mean that anyone who can use a 3D printer would be able to get a gun for free, the only thing they would have to do is get ammunition. Although there are drawbacks to 3D printing, I believe that it is still an amazing invention, and one of the greatest discoveries in science in the past decade. What is your take on the 3D printer? Do you believe that it is a good invention or one that will be misused for doing wrong?
